| Secretary Sebelius spotlights new efforts |
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen
Sebelius proposed new
rules that would expand the rights of patients to access their health
information through the use of health information technology. One
proposal is a voluntary Personal Health Record
Model Privacy Notice, which would creates an easy-to-read,
standardized template allowing consumers to compare and make
informed decisions based on health care providers' PHR privacy
and security policies, and data practices.

| Race is on for 5010 compliance |
Modern Healthcare
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act turned 15
years old in August,
and as evidence of its lasting impact, providers and payers will be
scrambling over the
next four months to meet yet another HIPAA compliance deadline.This
one is Jan. 1 and
requires health care providers, health plans and claims clearinghouses
to convert from a decade-old set of standards for electronic
data interchange to its more modern counterpart.
